Modern Poster and Modern Roman

Every month from 1932 to 1959, Alf R. Becker, one of America’s most talented and prodigious sign painters, created a new alphabet. These were showcased in Signs of the Times magazine. In this 27-year period, Becker created an incredible collection of hand-lettered typeface designs.

Throughout this work, he combined tried and true shapes and proportions with bold, eccentric and playful decorative styles. To this day, the designs look lively and fresh. While interest in Becker’s designs has endured among sign painters, it is only now that designers and graphic communicators can take advantage of his exceptional alphabets.

Mike Adkins and James Stirling of The Fontry, an Oklahoma based design and lettering studio, have carefully and sensitively reproduced Becker’s alphabets as digital fonts. The first in a series of Becker fonts is now available through Monotype Imaging. Each typeface is dramatically different from the others; and each is still as distinctive and versatile today as it was seven decades ago.

Modern Poster is a badder-than-bad poster font that is all business. Beware of those sharp points!

Every designer needs an authoritative display face like Modern Roman. Add a drop shadow or highlight or two and watch it come to life.
