Architec & New Gothic Light

Designs from Hans Bacher

What do Disney’s Lion King and our new typeface releases have in common? Hans Bacher. Born in Germany, where he worked as an animation artist and educator for many years, Bacher now lives in Southern California and is part of the Stylistic Design Team for Disney Feature Animation. Bacher was trained in the graphic arts and has won international awards for his animation designs. He also may be the only type designer who is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

 New Gothic Light

New Gothic Light

New Gothic Light is a quirky, high-waisted design that manages to be both lively and laid-back. Character strokes mimic energetic scrawls and serifs appear to be hurried afterthoughts. While its baseline is best described as “bouncy,” the slight left tilt to many of the letters lends the design a touch of western drawl. Appealingly ragged around the edges, New Gothic Light is refreshing, engaging–and highly animated.

Architec

“Runs with scissors” describes Architec’s typographic personality to a T-square. The carefully drawn base and cap lines do nothing to contain the natural exuberance of these letters. Architec is spontaneous, dramatic, and full of life. You wouldn’t choose Architec to set the text of Stephen King or Elmore Leonard’s next novel, but it might be right at home on the cover.
