Steele Moderne & Chicago Modern

Second Series of Becker Fonts Released

Steele Moderne and Chicago Modern

Every month from 1932 to 1959, Alf R. Becker, one of America’s most talented and prolific sign painters, created a new alphabet to be showcased in Signs of the Times magazine. Mike Adkins and James Stirling of The Fontry, an Oklahoma-based design and lettering studio, have carefully and sensitively reproduced many of Becker’s alphabets as digital fonts.

The first series of Becker fonts was released in December, 2000. This second series is now available as PostScript Macintosh and TrueType fonts.

The Steel Moderne and Narrowe families are square-shouldered designs that command attention. They’re not cute or whimsical, but for a strong, straightforward statement, these designs are ideal.

Chicago’s Board of Trade Building could have served as an inspiration for Chicago Modern. Tall, elegant and as Art Deco as a Busby Berkeley movie, Chicago Modern has grace, personality and authority.
