The Font Bureau Scout™ design is a fresh new sans serif typeface family that derives structural elements from both new and old: DIN, Venus and Cairoli.

Scout was drawn by Cyrus Highsmith for Geraldine Hessler’s redesign of Entertainment Weekly. The 24 members of the Scout typeface family, along with a related logotype, created a new typographic identity for the magazine – its first significant typographic update in a decade.

Highsmith, senior type designer at Font Bureau, is no stranger to magazine type design. Martha Stewart Living, The Source, MensHealth, the Spanish edition of Playboy, Rolling Stone, The Montreal Gazette (Canada), and The Sunday Independent (London) have all featured his faces.

But magazine type design isn’t Highsmith’s sole focus. He considers himself above all a draftsman. Drawing is his lifelong passion, and his type designs reflect this sensibility. He draws a calligraphic script and an industrial-strength sans serif face with equal ease.

Scout is available in six weights, from thin to black, each with a corresponding italic in both normal and condensed widths.
