Hand lettering has always been a passion of Laura Worthington’s. It all began when a grade school teacher chose to train her class to write in Chancery-based italics instead of the standard cursive round hand approach. This lead her to a career in graphic design with a focus on lettering. She hand lettered everything she could and when that wasn’t enough to satisfy her love of letters, she moved on from being a graphic designer to a typeface designer.
Samantha Script was lettered with a Brause Rose pointed pen. This nib creates thick to hairline thin lines depending on pressure and created the basis for this design. Lettering with this method is slow, deliberate and methodical. The result is a script face that is surprisingly legible while still offering economy of space in its condensed form.
Samantha Script was designed with a focus on variety, versatility, beauty and practicality. With measured rhythm and contrasting, connected strokes, Samantha possesses a flowingly smooth elegance with the ability to take on many appearances, from simple styling to the fanciest of all flourishes with its 2700+ glyphs that take advantage of OpenType.
Over 1100 alternate and swash letters feature ascenders and descenders that vary in length and complexity. Standard ligatures ensure that this font looks as perfect as possible and 20 discretionary ligatures enliven its style. Numerals are offered in their standard form, as well as an old style and a swash set too.
The addition of 60 ornaments and 45 catchwords offer even more design possibilities.

With 15 script and display faces designed, Laura has just scratched the surface of this new venture. All of her designs are based on hand lettering. Whenever she approaches a new design, she spends as much time as needed in the hand-lettering phase, attempting to master the new style she’s developed with the required quickness and dexterity of the hand in order to produce an easy, natural look to the finished work.
