ITC Hornpype

ITC Hornpype is a jocular display face inspired in part by the cartoons of the 1920s and ’30s. According to designer Mott Jordan, both Hornpype’s name and distinct dimensional quality can be traced to an early cartoon in which a cat blows on a horn with enough force to cause the instrument to bulge out. To create a three-dimensional look Jordan was careful to not draw highlights on every stroke, but instead added them to thicker strokes, creating letters that look as though they were, in his words, “squeezed from a toothpaste tube.” Jordan, a freelancer based in Santa Cruz, California, envisions the typeface used for a variety of purposes, such as circus posters, Latin-influenced design, or wherever a “fun, goofy” spirit is needed. Jordan feels the typeface works best with shorter words that are set in larger point sizes, and would be eye-catching from a distance.
