The lineage of the ITC Century® design dates back to 1894, when Linn Boyd Benton and T L DeVinne created a new font for Century Magazine.

Shortcomings in fonts previously used by the magazine had been determined, and a heavier, more readable font was requested. Benton and DeVinne delivered one in Century.

In the years that followed, Morris Fuller Benton then took up the reigns and designed many new variants of Century for American Type Founders. In 1975 International Typeface Corporation (ITC) commissioned Tony Stan to create a new family of Century with a wider range of styles. Conforming to the tastes of the day, Stan tightened the letterspacing and increased the x-height.

The ITC Century family consists of four weights with matching italics, and eight corresponding condensed faces, supplying a useful range of typefaces for magazine and newspaper work. ITC Century is, by every definition, a font super family.
