Neue Helvetica™
“Neue” means “new.” In the case of Neue Helvetica, it also means better. The first Helvetica was designed almost 50 years ago – for metal typesetting machines. This meant compromises had to be made in the design in order for it to work within the confines of the technology. Too make matters worse; the 34 fonts of Helvetica were also designed over 20+ year period – not exactly conducive to keeping the family a cohesive design.
To solve these problems, Linotype completely re-drew the Helvetica family for digital technology, correcting all the design problems of the original design – and adding 17 new fonts to the family. The result is not only a “Neue” Helvetica but also a much better Helvetica.
