For years Matthew Carter wondered why no Latin fonts with Bodoni proportions had been developed, or why no Bodoni designs had Latin serifs. He solved his problem by drawing the first weights of the Rocky™ typeface family. He then included italics to fill the gap, and expanded the family with the aid of Richard Lipton. Originally designed as a headline font for The Rocky Mountain News, the Rocky font is a true champion. Consisting of 40 weights, ranging from light to black with accompanying italics, it also includes compressed and condensed versions.
The Rocky typeface's contrasting thick and thin strokes are remeniscent of all renditions of Bodoni and provides a clear-cut effect due to its simplicity. It reproduces well, particularly in sizes over 12pt. The serifs are flat, think and unbracketed, with the stress always on the vertical strokes. The wide-ranging uses for Rocky make it a formidable opponent among super families.
