ITC Stone is more than a simple family of type. It’s an “extended” family that satisfies a broad range of users and address a multitude of graphic problems. Sumner Stone’s initial intent in creating the family was to aid the neophyte, but early in the design process he realized that he was creating a family of type that would also appeal to the most sophisticated of graphic designers.

In 1929, Stanley Morison, already typographic advisor to Monotype, was also made typographic advisor to The Times of London newspaper. One of his first responsibilities of the latter position was to redesign the newspaper. Several existing typestyles were tried first; but Morison and The Times executive staff found them unsuitable for one reason or another. The decision was then made to create a new, custom, design.

Originally called “Biblica,” the typeface that was to become ITC Weidemann was first commissioned in the early 1980s by the German Bible Society. This was on the occasion of the first Bible translation mutually sponsored by the German Catholic and Protestant church authorities.
