In ITC Professional Connections, Deborah Zemke has created a set of illustrations that demonstrate the same playful wit that she showed in her earlier DesignFont, ITC Situations. The images in Professional Connections play off of various themes, such as money, questions, vision, and surmounting obstacles. In addition to images of meetings, computers, and so on, Zemke has created surreal compositions like the woman with computer cables for hair, or the tree growing out of a book. Zemke, an illustrator based in Columbia, Missouri, says that she began with images of various professional areas and then developed a larger body of business-oriented pictures with a global theme. “I wanted variety,” she says, “in both what the subjects are and what kinds of images they are, whether they’re pictorial, conceptual, or decorative. Some started out as scratchboard illustrations, some as line tracings, but the scratchboard set the tone, with its strong black and white relationships.” She developed the final versions digitally in Macromedia FreeHand. Zemke has just completed illustrating her twenty-second book.
