The 1987 Stone family of fonts, created by designers Sumner Stone and Bob Ishi, is a large and versatile family of fonts. If two designers work on one font, who gets to name it? Since "ishi" is the Japanese word for "stone", the choice was obvious and no feelings were hurt.
When Sumner Stone began to design the font family that eventually became ITC Stone family, he wanted to create a wide-ranging font family that was easy to use for everybody, regardless of their graphic design skill level. It was soon apparent, however, that this large family of fonts was going to be useful even to the most experienced of graphic designers.
The ITC Stone Serif design very purposefuly blends a variety of characteristics, such as larger than normal x-heights, slightly condensed characters and a combination of written and sculptural forms. It is an extensively useful design, appropriate for both body text and headlines.
