The Klint™ typeface family offers precision with subtle humanist touches. Designed by Berlin-based typeface designer Hannes von Döhren, Klint appears at first glance to be hard edged, square shouldered, straightforward sans serif. But look at Klint more closely and you will notice that there is more to the design. The stroke weights have an understated modulation, and quiet curves soften the angular aspect of many characters. The lowercase ‘s’ is a perfect example of this careful design intonation. It seems to be constructed of simple squared-off shapes, but the top entry and bottom exit strokes are gentle curves. Other characters – like the ‘k,’ ‘R’ and ‘t’ – also have lively exit strokes. Klint’s italic designs are more than a simple obliqued roman; they present true cursive overtones.
At large sizes, especially in the bolder weights, Klint communicates with authority. Its distinctive character shapes and proportions make for a design that does not overpower the message and draws the reader in. At smaller sizes, Klint remains remarkably legible, thanks to the design’s large x-height, open counters and stroke modulation.
Klint is also an exceptionally comprehensive family. It offers five weights (from light to black), each in three widths (standard, condensed and extended), all with italic counterparts – a total of 30 typefaces in all. In addition, the complete family is available as a suite of OpenType Pro fonts, allowing graphic communicators to use this design while taking advantage of OpenType’s capabilities. OpenType Pro fonts provide for the automatic insertion of small caps, ligatures and alternate characters, and also offer an extended character set supporting most Central European and many Eastern European languages. Rounding out Klint’s range of characters are nine styles of figures – tabular and proportional lining figures, tabular and proportional old style figures, proportional small cap figures, numerators, denominators, superiors, and inferiors.
