The Hiscott Foundry

In typography class in art school the teacher gave an assignment that no one seemed to want to do. The day the assignment was due the teacher asked, "so, is anyone thinking of maybe designing fonts?" Jonathan Hiscott hadn't put much thought into it at the time, there were many more classes to take, so it was still early to make those decisions. A couple years later, not long after graduating, Jonathan was daydreaming about what it would be like to design fonts seriously and thought it must be fun. He tried it and was surprised at how pleased he was with his experiments. So now here we are. Currently Jonathan's approach is to start from scratch with each font. He looks at objects and experiments to see if an object or pattern's form can be the basis for the form of a font. Those that work out smoothly and seem like something that could be useful are completed and brought to market.
